A Comfortable Life
The sentence, a comfortable life, is oftentimes interpreted to mean a person has enough money to live a life free of worry from debt, bills, and the possible catastrophe that everything you have could disappear in a flash. That’s how my elders described it and as a child I then interpreted that to mean we were poor. Since those childhood days, I’ve come to interpret that sentence a bit differently. A comfortable life is a home where I am content. Happy with the things I have gathered around me, happy when I am home, and a sense of gratitude that I have a home.
Humans, I believe, have an instinctive ability to sense when something just feels right. Call it your gut feel or maybe just a knowing. When you walk into your home, do you like how you feel, are you happy with the things around you? Maybe, like my home, you don’t have fancy, expensive things, or the latest hot trends for 2026. Maybe what you do have is a comfortable life.
Have you ever walked into a house that is so clean, it’s almost antiseptic. Everything is placed perfectly. Not a dust bunny or cobweb to be found. Where you instantly feel that if you touch anything or sit anywhere you will disturb the very sterilized air. Perhaps the walls are a perfect shade of off-white, maybe even the furniture is white. I often feel like a muddy puppy ready to be scolded for tracking in dirt, or the curious child that must touch everything. Well, I can assure you this scenario is not my house, not even close. When you walk into my house you will feel at ease, welcome. At least that is how I hope you will feel. I don’t have matching colors; nothing is really new or trendy. We live in our home. We make messes and (gasp) we may not clean things up right away. The energy though, is healthy. It’s where we want to be when we come home, and often where we’d rather be when we are out.
I dabble in the ancient art of Feng Shui (a practice of balance and harmony with the earth) but I’m not a fanatic about it. From my studies I’v come to understand it is a way of creating a balance with the life force often called Qi. Feng Shui uses energy flow, color, light, earth elements, shapes and the compass points of N-S-E-W to create the balance. You probably instinctively do these things without thinking about it, because you know what feels and more than likely seems comfortable. I go back to that instinctive ability to sense when something just feels right. That little chair goes right there, those curtains are the perfect shade and material, those candles yes, they should sit right where they are. Feng Shui reminds me of a saying I would hear from my elders: A place for everything and everything in its place.
You can create your own comfortable life, a place you want to be. Use that wonderful human intuition built right inside you. Enjoy making your home part of your comfortable life.
